The Challenge: From The Student's Perspective

Alison was a mature student returning to university after a life change caused her to retire from a field that she had worked in for 36 years.

Alison was a hard working student who was determined to complete her foundation year at university before starting a biology degree. She had a difficult path to follow since she was enroling at university without any A-level qualifications and had to pass A-level Chemistry as a requirement to continue in the program.

It had been a while since Alison had been at school so she was not used to studying and revising for tests and exams. And the university had compressed a two year A-level course into one year program meaning that Alison was required to learn the course content at an accelerated rate. Also, the university had made it quite clear that if she didn't pass A-level Chemistry then she would be dropped from the program.

Alison was getting D, E and U grades on her topic tests. No matter how hard she studied or how many hours she revised for her tests and exams she couldn't earn a passing grade!

Her low test and exam grades and the expectation that she would be dropped from the program at the end of the year caused Alison's confidence to drop and she began to doubt that she would ever pass A-level Chemistry. Alison even doubted that she would be complete her biology program and start her new career.

Challenge Highlights

  • Disillusioned with A-level Chemistry because she didn't have an effective set of study skills.
  • Spending hours revising for her tests and exams only to receive a failing grade.
  • Low confidence in her ability to pass A-level Chemistry and growing concern that she would be dropped from her course at university.

The Solution: How I Approached The Challenge And Why

I approached the challenge of helping Alison by building up her self confidence and teaching her effective study skills and revision strategies.

Solution Core Concepts

An in-depth review of all of the concepts in the A-level Chemistry specification.

I reviewed all of the core concepts in the course with Alison and showed her how to link all of the subtopics together in the module. I taught Alison the maths that she needed to know in order to pass the course. And I showed Alison how to take notes in a lecture environment.

Solution Exam Preparation

A systematic approach to revision that adapts based on the results of tests and exams.

I taught Alison how to effectively revise for her topic tests and final exam. I showed her revision strategies that would help her recall key facts and concepts during her tests. And I taught Alison how to identify and revise key question types that could be on the test or the exam.

Solution Exam Psychology

A system to quickly build and maintain a high degree of confidence in your test taking abilities.

I taught Alison strategies that she could use to improve her self-confidence and overcome the doubt that she had about her ability to pass A-level Chemistry. I also showed her how to mentally prepare herself for her tests and exams so that she could perform at her best on the day.

Graeme teaches the specification to the finest detail which is what helped me earn my A grade. The time and effort he spent on me meant I could obtain amazing results on my exams. I could not have done it without him!
